Radar Hill and South Beach.

Bella Pacifica RV Park, Tofino BC (1 star)

Lee suggested we check out two different sites today and take a lunch along to eat somewhere along the way.

First up, Radar Hill and the Kapyong Memorial at that site. The hill had a number of radar installations used during the Korean and Cold Wars. The memorial speaks to the 2nd Battalion, PPCLI, who fought that battle with the Chinese on April 22 and 23, 1951. While on the hill, we met some young men who had caught a garter snake. We gave them some insight on the prevalence of those snakes in Canada.

Next up, we drove to Wickaninnish Beach and then hiked to South Beach with our lunch. South Beach has the singing stones, sounds made by the water as it rushes out of the pebble beach. We were there a little early for the waves to hit the main pebbles, but we had a great time eating lunch there and watching the pounding of the surf on the rocks.

History, even Canadian, was never a subject matter in school that I enjoyed or paid much attention to. My History marks were never remarkable, unless bad is remarkable. Over the years, as an adult I was able to visit Europe where World Wars took place, seeing the results, reading the information boards in those places. They share what was, and what has been lost. We visited many locations where the wars had taken their toll. A true appreciation for what it means to be Canadian became understood. I continue to learn and appreciate our country and the freedoms we take for granted.

Our country was VERY involved as I learned today reading more information boards at Radar Hill where the Kap'yong Memorial stands to commemorate the involvement of the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry during the Korean War. Seeing history is so much more interesting than a school book.

We sat on a log at South Beach for hours just looking out over the ocean, talking and also silently enjoying the views, the eagles overhead, and the sound of the surf crashing into the rocks.
