Welcome to spring in the Rockies.     [May 16, 2026]

↩ A disappointing way to end the trip. [May 15, 2026] Travel Diary Back Home

Not quite summer yet in the Rockies.

Crossings Motel, Saskatchewan River Crossing AB (1 star)

An uneventful drive along the Trans Canada highway today from Sicamous to the Alberta border. That is when things got interesting. A spring snowstorm was coming down hard to greet me back to my home province. Not very cold, quite pretty, and a measured drive to Saskatchewan River Crossing.

There is a tour bus of British people staying here tonight. I bet their tour operator never thought to tell them about Canadian Rockies weather.

I travelled the Banff - Jasper Highway 93 many times in my life and I always reminded myself never to stop there for anything but a washroom or a photo of the view of Howse Pass. Ok, so I caved this one and only time.

I should have filled up earlier, plus I don't recall if there is gas available before Rocky Mountain House. So, I braved my credit card and filled Tiggy up. That was at 2.61 per litre! I only paid 2.20 in Parksville and the current cost in Rocky Mountain House is 1.77. The word gouging comes to mind but hey, they gotcha.

The hotel room is outrageous at 228 but looks pittifully cheap compared to what I was seeing in Kelowna yesterday (520 for a room at the Econolodge on Highway 97, yuck).
