Carvings galore.
Map - Hudson's Hope to Prince GeorgeBlue Cedars RV Park, Prince George BC (2 stars)
Lee notes that when you drive through Chetwynd, BC, you cannot help but see all the wood carvings along the highway in town. They now have an annual wood carving festival attended by carvers from all over the world. We took the time to view the new ones from 2023. Amazing.
We decided to press on and tackle the distance to Prince George in one day. We got a spot in the same RV park we had used earier in 2023. At that time, we were given the spot right next to Lee's cousin Margaret, who was staying there for the whole summer. On this second stop, Lee went to look if Margaret was still there but he could not find her. He did find a nice couple from Fort St. John, who were originally from the Netherlands, indeed, not far from Lee's birthplace of Rotterdam. Much conversation ensued among the four of us.
These wood carvings are life-size likeness of various people and animals. These are not simple carvings. The eagle spread-out wings have each feather detailed. The faces of the people include every wrinkle, every fold in their clothing. The goalie looks like he could skate away from his net. The carvings are done in a festival that involves carvers from all over the world. My favourites were the goalie and the lady playing a piano. All carved to scale.
We continued on to Prince George, and met, as Lee notes, a couple from near Rotterdam, Netherlands who now live in Fort St. John, BC. The rest of the afternoon was a long conversation flipping between Englsh and Dutch as we shared Lee's early childhood years in Rotterdam, and my introduction to the Netherlands on our honeymoon. Since then, several visits, now history gave way to a lot of stories shared with these folks, and now I want to go again to the Netherlands.
Our evening ended with the two of us enjoying our evening coffee sitting outside the RV and watching the darkness fall, and the RV neighbours closing up for the night.
