Fas Gas RV Park, Haines Junction YT (2 stars)

Lee suggested we drive down to Kathleen Lake on the Haines Road for a peek at the lake. The Canadian Kluane National Park which contains Kathleen Lake is part of a combined four nature reserves in Alaska, BC and the Yukon that make up the largest ecological reserve in the world. The lake reminds Lee of Lake Louise.

Before we drove to the lake we met a Dutch couple at the gas station who now live in Curacao, but are originally from Alkmaar. They have been travelling the Americas for quite a long time and have done all of South America. Give them kudos - all that travel and living in a converted Mitsubishi Delica.

Another sign of being in a remote part of Canada. There was a huge electrical storm in Haines Junction about a week before we got there. It destroyed the electronics on one fueling island at the gas station. Repairs need to come from - ALBERTA! Hopefully they can fly in because the drive is about 2,150 kilometers one way.

What a variation of events to share today. There have been big Cumulo Nimbus clouds lurking to the north all day, but as the evening wears on, there is no sign of any storm or rain or wind. It has been another calm and warm day to enjoy another National Park and Nature Reserve. We now have 73 photos to choose the highlights of the day. For me, it was chatting with a chattering chipmunk, like he knew what I was talking about, and taking a photo of a tiny butterfly that I thought was a flower at first glance. It's pale blue-purple wings are edged with a couple of rows of dark and white. Looking up tiny blue butterflies popped up a photo of a Northern Blue Butterfly. In looking up what it is, I read - found on alpine tundra and subalpine meadows throughout much of Alaska. Well, that is close to where we are!

The Dutch couple we met gave me a chance to practice some Dutch and it felt good to be able to chat with them in their own language. From experience I know how tiring (not so stressful, but still hard) to be thinking and communicating in another tongue.
