A day of everything.

Map - Whitehorse to Dawson City

Bonanza RV Park, Dawson City YT (2 stars)

Lee summarizes that this day in our travels might have been the most varied, intense and interesting.

Our travels from Whitehorse to Dawson were originally supposed to stop at Pelly Crossing. But with a forecast for rain the next day, we kept on going and did the entire 550 clicks today.

We had forest fire smoke, we hit and killed an eagle, we drove endless kilometers on road being rebuilt and also some distances on gravel road. We saw vast open vistas of immense distances of land and saw the mighty (and wide) Yukon and Pelly rivers on several occasions.

We rolled into an RV park in Dawson, found an empty spot and settled in.

And some of you may ask - how bad were the gravel roads where they were rebuilding. We were down to 10 kph for long stretches. And yes, the eagle left some damage on the front of Chuck that will need some big plastic parts to be replaced. But all the lights were spared. See the photos.

The term "corduroy" is one of fabric that has small rows of almost furry fabric with just the base fabric holding the rows apart with small, usually one eighth inch space. If you have ever worn corduroy pants you know what I mean and the sound the pants make LOLOL.

I digress. Corduroy very clearly defines the "Klondike Highway". There were obviously not "real" discussions with people we chatted with beforehand who have driven that road. Interestingly any reference to the vibrator effect on truck and 5th wheel were not clarified. I had to take photos of inside the RV upon docking. It reminded me of party days in the 60's. I had to laugh later too when I opened the bathroom's medicine cabinet. The narrow shelves of meds etc were oh soo cuddly, leaning against each other, not a one upright.

Our shoe rack was quite shuffled, good thing we weren't putting on the shoes in the dark.

Fortunately nothing inside was broken, just tossed. A cupboard door had opened via one swerve and closed on the next swerve as observed by a dishtowel sticking out of a cabinet. Even a few items that hang on the walls found soft landing spots.

Sadly, our journey was not without an incident as a gopher crossed the highway ahead of the vehicle in front of us. The vehicle sent it "beyond" its life and a sharp eyed Bald Eagle spotted road kill lunch instantly. He swooped down in front of us and Lee could not swerve in time to miss him and keep us and the RV on the road. The bird literally flew into the right side of the plastic grill. The photo shows the damage on the grill. Lee's missing tooth is not part of the incident.
