Driving the Alaska Highway.

Map - Highway 37 Junction to Teslin

Dawson Peaks RV Campground, Teslin YT (2 stars)

Lee says enough of the Little Nugget RV Park and let's head in the direction of Whitehorse.

But first, we hear from the gas station attendant at the Highway 37 Junction that cell service is available a short drive east towards Watson Lake. At Liard Hot Springs we get the service and spend a bit of time conducting business that requires both a cell phone and internet. All done in a bit and we turn around and head down Yukon Highway 1.

We are not sure what hit the economy along the highway, but we suspect Covid may have played a part. There are some dramatic examples of failed gas stations, restaurants and campgrounds along the way to Teslin.

We end up in an RV park that the semi-retired owners have largely shut down, but provide power and water for 25 dollars. A great deal and a nice quiet place. While eating supper a motorhome shows up and picks a spot. They are from, small world, Regina.

Highways are quiet for a long weekend, perhaps everyone has found their quiet spot for the weekend.

We watched black bear a couple of times, wandering off the shoulder of the road as we approached.

We stopped at an info board - and stood on the Continental Divide. The highway meanders through a land of rock, trees and lakes. Mostly trees. As Lee notes - many abandoned gas stations, and the stores that go with them. Most look as if one day everyone just left. One place notes "Closed for the Season" and we think that was a few seasons ago. One gets the gist of the humour as one shop that probably sold the rocks and gems from the region is named the "Best Little Ore House".
