Quiet, calm, even the woodpecker sat still.
Mountain Aire RV Park, Cassidy BC (1 star)
After a lazy breakfast, we headed out for a stroll through the RV park. We passed many old, established sites that are essentially full time homes. In our area, we are virtually by ourselves. As we got back, Lez spotted a woodpecker on the side of a tree. Lez approached slowly, taking pictures, until she was almost at the base of the tree. The woodpecker did not move until we approached the very bottom of the trunk. We have never been that close to a woodpecker before.
Lee went out for some groceries. He noted that there is no left turn out onto the Trans Canada Highway (after carefully negotiating the one lane train bridge). We need to use a U-turn route to get going north to Nanaimo and beyond. Conclusion. Don't choose Mountain Aire as an RV destination.
Lez Notes: It's not that the campground is terrible at Mountain Aire, it's just not made for reeeeally long RV's. Lee had quite the time maneuvering all the trees to back into our spot. We had been designated a different spot - that was even worse for access! We survived the docking and are still talking!
The walkabout felt good this morning and we did take a few photos of the beauty of the park. The female Pileated Woodpecker was not frightened by us getting close and we were able to snap a wonderful photo of her. She was on a dead pine tree. Lower on the tree trunk were the neatest yellow fungi/mushrooms that will aid the decomposition of the pine tree.
As Lee headed out for a few essentials, I decided it was time to make a good batch of spiced pita strips. I spent the afternoon heating up the Schooner - with warmth and spice. Now we need more hummus - grin.
