We drove down to the Cypress Hills Centre Block via Highway 271 this morning. Our end point was the Conglomerate Cliffs. The views here are outstanding. For Lee, this is one of the most beautiful places he has seen.
We were first here in August 1974 with Pwagen. It was hard for us to imagine driving over the last 15 clicks or so given the rocky and bumpy roads with a four month old Porsche, but we were young and we did it. We took the time to take some photos that might be similar to ones we took 48 years ago.
We then headed further west to the Ranger Campground and had lunch at Battle Creek.
What a step back into memory land. A brand new Porsche over gravel roads 48 years ago. Even Chuck the Truck took some bounces as we hit various conditions of gravel. Fortunately, the truck is only dusty after the day's adventures, as the land has not seen rain for quite some time. Dugouts and other watering holes are bone dry.
'Lunch' at Battle Creek - was not a luxurious restaurant - it was a backpacked lunch at a picnic table in the boreal forest atop a land that was not disturbed by the glaciers - the Conglomerate Cliffs. The cliffs above the gullies are stones that appear to be cemented in place, withstanding millenia years of erosion. As a student of Geology in university - I still find it fascinating to stand on the land that dinosaours walked. A very special place for us.
