King tides and wind whipped waves.

We watched as the damage started We surveyed the damage afterwards

Surfside RV Resort, Parksville BC (2 stars)

They say this is a once in a lifetime occurrence, that being a very high tide (called a king tide) in conjunction with very high waves and a very strong wind. All this coming from the north and having the most impact on shorelines that are north facing.

The Surfside Resort, with its seawall is oriented straight north.

Lez wonders - where do I start: Today around 9 am we decided to check out the wave action at the sea wall walkway. Waves were breaking against the sea wall and crash landing and churning up the stones and rock, taking the smaller stones down into the ocean-facing back ends of a whole lotta RV's. The spray was hitting some of them too, and the subsequent wave water was running past and under the RV units flooding onto the roadway. Just how much flooding and wave damage became apparent when we went out for another walk around 3:30 p.m. after a whole whack of service vehicles started passing by. But there was no way to walk the sea wall walkway, even though the waves had subsided.

When we first wandered along the walkway, we wondered how the huge logs and tree trunks (and many a root ball) could get caught up so high on the boulders along the sea wall breakwater. Well, as we stood in a VERY cold, face numbing wind, we watched the waves toss those logs like toothpicks.

Words cannot truly describe the force of the King Tide mixed with a fierce north wind whipping up waves crashing and spraying higher than the RV's along the breakwater walkway. This may be the largest set of photos we've shared - but this is also by far the largest impact of nature I have every witnessed. I will let the photos speak for themselves.
