Liard Hot Springs Provincial Park, Liard River BC (2 stars)
Lee thought this would be an unremarkable drive until we reached the hot springs. Not quite.
First off, we encountered not one but two herds of Woodland Bison grazing along the highway. In each case, they had what looked like healthy calves with them. They are amazing and breathtaking animals.
Then, we stopped at a small pull-out to make lunch. Well, the pull-out had a wonderful view of rapids on the Liard River.
Finally, we arrived at Liard Hot Springs Provincial Park and were able to get a site. Shortly after we walked over to the hot springs. They are truly spectacular because, unlike the swimming pools at other hot springs in BC, at this one you are swimming in a small creek. Yup, a creek with vegetation on the banks and 52c water flowing by.
An unremarkable day, not!
OMG those Woodland Bison are large! One big one - the bull, complete with nasty looking horns, no doubt the papa of the clan, was lounging on the side of the highway and we drove by slowly. There was one wee bison, still with his light brown colouring.
The highway was cut through the land, leaving some very large and colourful cliffs on the side of the road. What a conglomerate of rock underneath a few inches of dirt for the greenery to grow on.
