We visited some interesting places around Dawson on our last day here.
First up, we drove up Bonanza Creek Road and visited the historic Dredge No. 4. There were once more than ten in the Dawson area, doing essentially mechanized gold digging. It is stated that in its life, Dredge No. 4 extracted over two tons of gold from the area. It is now a National Historic Site. We then drove a couple of clicks further to see an actual "claim" that is open to the public. Gold panning happens here, if you have the time and inclination.
Next, we drove up Dome Road to the top of the mountain. From here we got fantastic views of Dawson City, the Yukon River and Bonanza Creek. Little black flies were the order of the day, though. We ate our lunch in the comfort of fly-free Chuck.
Last, we headed into Dawson for one last look. The old fire hall has a fire pump that the curator said took a quarter million dollars to restore. It certainly looks like it. Amazing! Then it was a quick stop at the grocery store, a last drive down Second Street and back to the Schooner.
This was quite a tourist packed day for us. Our earlier visit through Dawson was a rainy/dreary day. Today the sun shone brightly and it looked like a fresh city. It is amazing what the sunshine does for a view.
The opportunity to pan for gold just didn't seem appealing. The gold dust and pieces need to be accumulated in larger quantities to collect the way I collect rocks. Yes, I have a few "special" rocks that have caught my eye and one day will be back on a fireplace mantle.
Lunch overlooked the Klondike and Yukon convergence from a fly free Chuck.
We ended our day back at the RV, just chillin. Lee made us a great salmon BBQ for dinner.
This evening chlllin' to Seeger on CD. Just GROOVIN! SOOO glad Lee got me a ticket way back when I was attending a quilting conference in Ontario.
