We heard every language on earth in Skagway     [Jul 6, 2023]

This trip's travel Calendar Back Home

Carefully navigating the masses of cruise ship tourists.

Lee is reminded of an incident in the Netherlands when he was there with Aaron. Upon arriving at the famous Kinderdijk windmills, we see no one strolling the paths to the windmills. All of a sudden Aaron says - Dad, look behind you. Sure enough one of those European river cruise boats had just docked on the other side of the dike and a swarm of Americans were headed for the windmills. We ran to stay ahead of them.

So, we walk into Skagway's main street and Lee sees two ginormous cruise ships at the end of main street. Oh-oh. Yup. The streets are teeming with tourists speaking every known language in the world, stopping abruptly in front of us on the sidewalk and not very often poking into a couple of dozen or more diamond, jewelry and gem stone stores. We make it to the end of main street and we notice two more ginormous cruise ships slightly to the left. Holy smokes. Ten thousand tourists with two or three hours to spend in town.

Skagway reminds Lee of a number of towns along the coast that popped up in the 1880's to support the gold rush. They are generally interchangeable, except for the tourists. Skagway must be a ghost town in the winter, just like Prince Rupert, Stewart, and others.

We wander for a while and then our bus arrives to take us back to Whitehorse.

Several years back, mom and my sisters and I WERE those swarms of tourists off the boat!

After our dad passed, mom took us on a trip to do an Alaskan cruise. Today was a wee trip back in time. I even went into the same quilt shop I'm sure. The name may have changed, but the Rushin' Tailor's Quilt Alaska helped me get my "fabric fix". No - I have no idea what quilt that will end up in!

With the warm weather, it is hard to imagine the snow that falls here in the winter. I will leave those images to see in books and the internet.

I did notice at the shoe store "Mukluks" were for sale. Was tempted to buy another pair, the old ones long long gone. Warm and comfy, they were. Better than any other winter boots I've had.
