We then drive into Hyder, Alaska for a quick look around. Here is Lee's thought - does Hyder have a greater ratio of dead vehicles to running vehicles or a higher ratio of abandoned buildings versus occupied ones. He's not sure, both ratios appear to be higher than 2-1. At one point we see a Marion Power Shovel almost hidden completely in the trees. A man who lives nearby came over for a chat and mentioned that the equipment was already parked there when he moved to Hyder in 1972.
The bush in and round Hyder is filled with abandoned equipment and vehicles. Houses are abandoned and some have collapsed completely. Curious, peaceful and sad all rolled into one.
The weather was a beauty day, and the colours for photos were great - including all the abandoned vehicles - some that look like they were just driven into the forest which then grew up around them.
