The Zwaal and Van Baren families originated mostly from in and around Rotterdam. As such, Lee and Lez spent a lot of time in that city.
One of the unique things about Rotterdam is its very modern architecture in the city centre. In May 1940, the Germans bombed the city centre in order to force the Dutch government to surrender. Just a handful of buildings remained. As such, the city council began a plan to rebuild the city centre into a modern theme.
The rebuilding has resulted in a couple of things. First, there are no small, narrow streets with 17th century houses and no typical canals as you might find in Amsterdam. Second, there is very little tourism in Rotterdam so it is relatively quiet, even at the 'tourist' spots. Lez recalls being in a bus in Rotterdam when the lady next to her asked for directions.
