Visiting family in Lekkerkerk     [Apr 24 - 27, 2025]

Back Home

King's Day, firepits and smoke on the water.

Hanneke and Aldo have a wonderful home that we saw for the first time. Their backyard view is of farm land used as pasture for cows. The fences (one of them is their backfence, really) are actually small water filled ditches called a sloot or slooten in Dutch. We were regularly visited by ducks in the sloot whenever we stood next to the water.

We celebrated King's Day in the town centre of Lekkerkerk. Tractors, motorbikes and a lot of people dressed up in orange clothes. There was even a traditional draaiorgel, a dutch street organ.

Aldo and Hanneke have a small motorhome, just the perfect size for two people. We think we inspired them with our Roads Less Gravelled. They regularly take off for weekends and vacations with it.

We had discovered that a form of Jello called Jelly was available in the grocery store. So we bought some and has some ready for after our dinner. It was a hit, especially with Aldo's father, Leen Lammens. He was apprehensive at first but soon enjoyed three helpings.
