First thing we noticed was the high water in the estuary and the sound of the waves coming from the Salish Sea. We armed ourselves with cameras and batteries, expecting to get some nice shots of crashing waves.
As we walked the main road in Surfside, it became apparent that water was coming in from somewhere. Lee went back to get Chuck so we could advance further into the old part of Surfside without wading in rapidly rising water. When we reached the clubhouse, the water was crashing over the seawall with every wave and running down into the RV lots nearby.
Still not realizing the magnitude of the damage, Lez went to see her mom and Lee did the laundry in the small laundry building nearest our site. The only thing he noticed, besides the high wind, was that the smaller rocks on the seawall had been moved around.
And then he noticed the BC Hydro trucks, fire trucks and Emergency Measures volunteers show up. The EMO folks took over the laundry building as a command post. And the Surfside maintenance staff were working very hard to get some pumps and hoses in place.
As we removed the last of our laundry, some residents were already showing up to seek emergency support.
