Lee thinks back and concludes he has not been through the Fraser Canyon since 1961 when he and his family travelled from Regina to Vancouver to visit relatives.
Most of the driving time today was along the Thompson and Fraser Rivers. They are at times wide and lazy and at other times narrow and full of rapids. We saw a few people rafting along the way.
South of Lytton (or what remains of it - that is another story in itself) we encountered a stretch of road impacted by the November 2021 floods. At Jackass Mountain they are using a Bailey Bridge (one lane) and pilot vehicles to guide traffic past the big washout. There is no evidence yet that construction of a replacement bridge is underway.
I'm thinking that I cannot believe that we would not have taken P-wagen on that highway - twists and turns and just made for the little car. We have a lot of old photos to upload - and maybe one day will be able to confirm that Lee has been though it since 1961 and that we have seen it at least once together.
The road past Lytton is actually fenced along the highway and the town is not accessible to the general public. In the summer of 2021 record heat temperatures were recorded, 120F or 49C and a wildfire burnt most of the town structures.
This summer's July brought with it another wildfire. Most of the evacuees are members of the Lytton First Nation. The fire started about a mile outside the village of Lytton, where the ruins from the 2021 fire still sit amid neighborhoods where others had begun to rebuild.
November then brought flooding and mudslides and roads being washed out in the region. There are many families still living in motels. It is very hard to comprehend how harsh Mother Nature can be.
