A Macarena celebration. [May 26, 2026]

A Macarena celebration at the Biggs home in La Perle.

Lez was a member of the Macarena womens group for over 30 years. They started when they all had young kids, living in the Edmonton community of La Perle. They would exchange babysitting favours (I can still remember the small chits they used) among a group of them. The group eventually grew to 12 women.

Eventually they gathered for group fun nights, usually once per month. They would each bring food and drink and meet in one of their homes.

Later, they went on trips together, going to Vancouver, Seattle, and more. Some eventually went on cruises together.

At the time the group was forming, the macarena dance was all the craze. The name Macarena stuck as a group name.

And eventually, the men were invited to the occasional get-together.

Lez was the second of the group to pass on.
