We take a note of the cenote.
Cenotes are quite common on the Yucatan peninsula as well as Florida. But none are more grand than this one at Il Kil. Cenotes are formed when the softer limestone erodes away leaving a hole filled with ground water. At this one, they have dug a tunnel along the side so that people can descend all the way to the bottom at the water level. The water is a further 45 meters deep at that point.
Several of our group went all the way down and then swam in the ground water. Quite an experience. Lee went down but did not feel like swimming in it.
It has become quite a tourist site over the years with the usual Mayan warriors hoping to get some money from having their picture taken.
In order to get to the cenote entrance and stairway you must walk through the tourist shop. We wondered if some of the souvenirs were actually made in China.
