Roads slightly gravelled.
Map - Eagle Plains to InuvikNova Inn, Inuvik NT (no stars)
Lee observes one final thing before we leave Eagle Plains. At breakfast, he notes there are five dogs laying down and mostly sleeping at the restaurant entrance. They belong to, we believe, the owner of the hotel. The dogs are vey well behaved as they wait for their boss to finish eating her breakfast. Only in the Yukon we guess.
So, off we go further north on the Dempster HIghway. We cross the Arctic Circle, then the border with the Northwest Territories, navigate a ferry near Fort MacPherson, then another at Tsiigehtchic and finally arrive in Inuvik. The roads got better and better the further north we drove, and they got substantially better once we were in the NWT.
OK, time to get some supper. Well, it's Sunday evening and everything is closed except The Roost pizza place. We manage to get one and dine in the hotel room.
Oh, and about those two ferries. They load and unload at the shore on the gravel. Usually in the same spot.
A fitting end to a very odd, different day. The power has gone out. Since the sun is still keeping an almost daytime daylight that makes this almost midnight look like 8 pm. The sun will barely go below the horizon here in Inuvik, we did not notice the time. Lee went to fill our water bottles from the dining room main floor, and the elevators were not working. Stairwells were used. We understand this is a normal occurence. What I didn't expect was another squirrel encounter. As I took a look into the hallway, there was a squirrel at the far end, and it started running my way. It stopped, looked at me and continued to the other end and down that stairwell.
We crossed the Arctic Circle this afternoon. We apparently missed a time change which really didn't make too much difference for us. We crossed the MacKenzie River via a ferry today too!
