Where did all the Americans go
Map - Around KitwangaKitwanga RV Campground, Kitwanga BC (2 stars)
Lee admits that we are not early birds. We are up late and rise late. However, it is interesting to see the campground activity. Yesterday afternoon most of the available RV sites were occupied by Americans, presumably off to Alaska. By the time we rose this morning, they were all gone.
Gitwangak Battle Hill National Historic Site of Canada.
No fancy buildings with artifacts, displays and interpretive stations. There is however, a long set of stairs leading down to one gigantic spectacular view of the scenic Kitwanga River valley from atop a high grassy knoll. There are depressions in the grassy hill, where the Gitwangak people overlooked their settlement along the Skeena River below in the mid 1700's and 1800's. If you didn't notice the shallow depressions on the hill you would never know there once were five cedar longhouses surrounded by a palisade. As we stood and photographed the view, we were watched by an Eagle way down below across the river, and you can bet he didn't miss a movement we made. After the long climb back up the hill of stairs, we took more photos.
The Kitwanga Bell Tower still stands in Gitwangak Village, along with several totems.
I captured a couple of photos of local butterflies. Once back at the RV, the computer was busy searching the identify of the butterflies, a Northern Crescent and a White Swallowtail.
