Map - To Waskesiu and back

Port Kelly (2 stars)

Lee's first visit to Waskesiu (Cree word for Red Deer). Just before we got to Waskesiu, we stopped at the Height of Land tower, which gave us a fantastic view of the land north and west. Who says Saskatchewan is flat and prairie.

Beautiful lake, beach and facilities. We spent a long time sitting on a bench near the beach, eating lunch and watching the lake and the people on the beach.

After getting back to Kelly's place, we took it easy, walked Hobbes (or he walked us) and chatted with Bob. At one point, Hobbes slowly wandered over and came almost face to face with their 16 year old dog, Rudy.

We spent several hours with Bob and Leona, reminiscing about family and the north country. Dad Worel was prominent in many of the stories.

Memories of Waskesiu and the north country: This week, the 10th anniversary of dad's passing is bringing back a lot of memories. Today's travels brought back more. Lee and I were planning to head to Otter Rapids, and Stanley Mission too, but the hot weather and, I believe, a few lightening strikes have set off forest fires close to those locations. We have decided to leave that for the next time through northern Sask - likely on the way to Manitoba another year.

Lunch packed and a good night's sleep got us started on day of great weather, and seeing so much again, and taking way too many pictures again. Waskesiu has, of course, changed a lot since 1966. It is a great place to vacation - water is clear, grounds are kept up, facilities are clean. And Olaf's is a great ice cream parlour!
